Quelites of the Chihuahuan Desert: Desert Onion

Quelites are Mexican wild greens or edible tender herbs, often referred to as “edible weeds” or “potherbs”. Originating from the Náhuatl word quilitl, these nutritious greens are similar to spinach or leafy greens but with more complex, herbaceous flavors.

Las Milpitas presentation at Tom Mays Park – Friday, April 10

In various cultures and peoples, the year begins when the Vernal Equinox or the Spring Season starts. We at Las Milpitas del Norte follow this conception to be in harmony with nature. Another way to be in harmony with nature is by following a seasonal diet. Various plants are best harvested and consumed at different times throughout the year. We want to show the community, through a series of presentations, some edible native plants of the Chihuahuan Desert and how to use them in their home kitchens. Our first presentation will be about Allium Macropetalum, also known as Desert Onion or San Juan Onion. The presentation will be held at @franklinmountains State Park on Friday, April 10th, at 5:00 PM.
