Greetings from the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens. On behalf of our City of El Paso team at the Zoo and our colleagues across the city I want to personally invite you to El Paso’s Third Chihuahuan Desert Conference on November 15-16, 2023. The conference will bring together researchers and conservation advocates from across the Chihuahuan Desert in the US and Mexico to help facilitate collaboration in the region and learn of new programs recently completed or underway.
This meeting is the only event held in West Texas focused solely on the Chihuahuan Desert and the importance of building relationships critical to advancing conservation goals across the ecoregion.
The conference was inspired by my involvement years ago with the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute and National Park Service symposiums and meetings in Alpine, Las Cruces and McAllen during the 1980s and later at the White Sands Symposium in 2012. In 2016 Fort Davis National Historic Site Superintendent David Larson and I joined conservation leaders representing 28 transboundary conservation initiatives located on six different continents at a workshop sponsored by Glacier National Park. At that meeting the number one take away for all of us was the importance of relationships in moving conservation efforts forward. That in a nutshell is what this conference is all about and when you read about how the Zoo collaborated with Big Bend a few years later, on pages 25 of the report, you will see a perfect example of what is possible.
