The black-tailed jackrabbit is the most common jackrabbit in the Chihuahuan Desert, often found in open scrublands, grasslands, and overgrazed areas. As a key prey species for coyotes and hawks, they are distinguished by their long ears and fast, zigzag running speeds (up to 40 mph). These hares are highly active at dawn, dusk, and night, utilizing shrub browsing for moisture. Photo by Ken Steiner.
