Pronghorn populations in West Texas, specifically the Trans-Pecos region, have experienced declines in recent decades, but restoration efforts are showing positive results.
While drought, habitat loss, and fences continue to pose challenges, conservation programs involving translocation and habitat restoration are helping to stabilize and increase pronghorn numbers.
The Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) at Sul Ross State University is actively involved in pronghorn research and restoration efforts in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. This work includes studying pronghorn habitat selection, dietary needs, fawn survival, and the impact of factors like grazing regimes and translocation on pronghorn populations.
Watch for pronghorn near El Paso on the highway to Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks.
