This week is pollinator week

Pollinator Week is an annual celebration in support of pollinator health to raise awareness for pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them.    Pollinators are the vital agents that move pollen from one flower to another, enabling plants to reproduce and produce fruits and seeds. They are essential because they underpin plant reproduction, which is crucial for healthy ecosystems and food production. Without pollinators, many plants, including crops, would struggle to survive, impacting food security and biodiversity.

The El Paso Zoo will present a special Pollinator Week presentation by Oliver Neria in the Wildlife Amphitheater at 11am on Sunday, June 22, 2025.

Oliver Neria is a second-year PhD student in UTEP’s Ecology and Evolutionary Biology program. He has conducted research on native bees in the Chihuahuan Desert since 2017 and is interested in better understanding the ways that our pollinators behave in human-modified environments

Mason bees are vital pollinators, especially in early spring when many plants bloom. By
providing them with suitable nesting sites and native plants, we can support their populations
and, in turn, enhance our gardens and our desert ecosystem.
